Neha Bora Details Alleged Police Action During Protests In Delhi

AISA leader recounts detention during protests against CEC Gyanesh Kumar.

All India Students’ Association (AISA) national president Neha Bora has recounted her alleged detention and other instances of police action during recent protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in Delhi. Addressing a press conference, Bora said the demonstrations had expanded from a specific demand for accountability into what she described as a broader citizens’ movement focused on democracy, electoral rolls and the right to protest. Her account comes amid several days of demonstrations in the national capital.

Bora recalled a citizens’ march on September 25, saying activists, lawyers and public representatives, including Yogendra Yadav, Anjali Bhardwaj, Rajya Sabha MP Manoj Jha and TMC MP Mahua Moitra, participated in the initiative. She said the involvement of people from different backgrounds reflected an effort to raise concerns over the electoral process collectively. Protests were subsequently organised in Delhi and Mumbai, with demonstrators raising questions over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and demanding accountability from the Election Commission.

According to Bora, protesters returned to the streets despite earlier detentions during demonstrations in Delhi. She claimed that nearly 1,000 people were detained and taken to different police stations during one of the protests, while further demonstrations were organised in the following days. Other reports have confirmed that hundreds of protesters were detained during the anti-CEC demonstrations, including AISA activists and opposition leaders. Delhi Police have also registered cases linked to some of the protests and cited restrictions on unauthorised gatherings.

Recounting the October 4 march from India Gate towards Jantar Mantar, Bora claimed that around 3,000 people participated and that some protesters were selectively detained. She said she was placed inside a private vehicle after being taken into custody, while other protesters who attempted to accompany her were pushed away by police personnel. Reports from the day said Bora and other protesters were detained for several hours during the demonstrations, with police and protesters also facing confrontations around barricades.

Bora further alleged that the vehicle carrying her was prevented from moving for nearly an hour as protesters gathered around it. She said some women protesters climbed onto the vehicle while others sat in front of it in an attempt to stop its movement. AISA had alleged that Bora was taken away in a private, unmarked vehicle, while Delhi Police officials disputed aspects of the account. Bora was later released from the Narela Industrial Area police station, according to reports.

Bora said the protests were ultimately intended to seek accountability from institutions and individuals whom protesters believe have a responsibility to safeguard democratic processes. She maintained that questions concerning electoral rolls, the SIR exercise and the right to protest would continue to be raised. The demonstrations have involved student organisations, civil society activists and political groups, making the issue a continuing point of political and civic debate in Delhi.
