NCP (SP) to Decide Maharashtra Leadership Amid Patil Resignation Buzz
Key meeting to address Jayant Patil’s future
The Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction) has scheduled a crucial general body meeting on July 15 to chart the future of its Maharashtra unit amid swirling speculation about state president Jayant Patil’s resignation. Reports in some media outlets claim that Patil, a long-time Sharad Pawar loyalist, has stepped down, with MLC Shashikant Shinde poised to succeed him. However, the party has not officially confirmed these claims, and senior leader Jitendra Awhad dismissed them as “mischievous” on Saturday.
Patil, who has led the Maharashtra unit since 2018, first hinted at stepping down during the NCP’s 26th foundation day event on June 10 in Pune. Addressing party workers in the presence of Sharad Pawar, he emphasized the need for new leadership, stating, “Pawar Saheb gave me many opportunities. I was entrusted with this responsibility for seven years, but it’s time to give a chance to new faces.” His remarks sparked emotional protests from supporters urging him to stay.
Awhad, NCP (SP)’s chief national spokesperson, reiterated that the party operates under strict rules and discipline, downplaying resignation rumors. “Let’s see what happens at the July 15 meeting,” he told PTI, signaling that any leadership decision will be collective. Shinde, a potential successor, expressed readiness to take on the role, calling it a “turning point” for his career, but no official announcement has been made.

Patil, an eight-term MLA from Islampur, has been a cornerstone of the NCP since its inception in 1999. He remained loyal to Sharad Pawar after the 2023 party split triggered by Ajit Pawar’s rebellion. His tenure included key roles in the Maha Vikas Aghadi government, serving as Water Resources Minister, and previously as Finance, Home, and Rural Development Minister.
The July 15 meeting at YB Chavan Centre, attended by Sharad Pawar and senior leaders, is expected to clarify the leadership question ahead of upcoming local elections. Speculation of internal rifts and potential factional realignments has intensified, but the party remains focused on strengthening its position in Maharashtra.
