Nana Patole's Feet-Washing Video Triggers Political Row in Maharashtra

A political controversy has erupted in Maharashtra after a video showing senior Congress leader Nana Patole participating in a Guru Purnima ritual went viral on social media. The footage shows two men washing Patole's feet, placing flowers on and around them, and offering floral tributes while he remained seated on a sofa. The incident quickly drew criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which described it as an example of the "culture of Congress leaders." The video has since become the subject of political exchanges between the ruling party and the opposition.

The ceremony took place during Guru Purnima, a traditional Hindu festival dedicated to honouring teachers and spiritual guides. In the video, fruits can also be seen placed near Patole's feet as part of the ritual. While the visuals attracted widespread attention online, political opponents questioned the appropriateness of the display, arguing that such acts of public reverence involving elected representatives create an undesirable image and invite unnecessary criticism.

Reacting to the video, Maharashtra Revenue Minister and senior BJP leader Chandrashekhar Bawankule criticised Patole, saying the incident reflected the mindset and culture of Congress leaders. He remarked that political leaders should avoid participating in activities that generate negative publicity and public criticism. According to Bawankule, such incidents serve no meaningful purpose and instead become a source of controversy, particularly when they are widely circulated on social media platforms.

Responding to the criticism, Nana Patole rejected allegations of encouraging or demanding such a ritual. He clarified that the two individuals seen washing his feet were younger members of his own family who considered him their guru. According to Patole, the ceremony was performed voluntarily on the occasion of Guru Purnima as a mark of personal respect and tradition. He maintained that he neither instructed nor compelled anyone to perform the act.

Patole also launched a counterattack against the BJP, asserting that the ruling party had no moral authority to lecture others on culture or traditions. Referring indirectly to allegations linked to donation funds associated with the Ram temple, he said those involved in such controversies should refrain from preaching cultural values to others. His remarks added a fresh political dimension to what began as a social media debate over the Guru Purnima ritual.

The incident has once again highlighted how ceremonial and religious practices involving political leaders can quickly become flashpoints in India's political discourse. While supporters may view such acts as expressions of personal faith or respect, opponents often interpret them as displays of personality cults or political symbolism. With both the Congress and the BJP exchanging sharp remarks over the issue, the controversy is likely to remain part of Maharashtra's ongoing political debate in the coming days.
