Mumbai Weather Today: IMD Forecasts Thunderstorms, Heavy Rain Amid Waterlogging

IMD forecasts heavy rain as waterlogging disrupts parts of Mumbai.

Heavy rain lashed several parts of Mumbai early on Monday, triggering waterlogging in low-lying areas and disrupting traffic movement across the city. Water accumulation was reported from the Andheri subway, Worli Sea Link, Kings Circle, Borivali, Vile Parle, Bandra and several other locations after intense spells of monsoon rainfall. Civic authorities continued to monitor the situation as commuters faced delays during the morning rush hour.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Mumbai is likely to experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, gusty winds of 30-40 kmph and heavy rainfall at isolated places through the day. The weather office has advised residents to remain cautious, particularly in flood-prone areas, as intermittent heavy showers may continue. The IMD also reported high humidity levels, with the Mumbai-Santacruz observatory recording a temperature of 25.2 degrees Celsius and 100% humidity at 5.30 am IST.

The persistent rainfall led to severe waterlogging in several parts of the city, slowing vehicular movement and affecting daily commuters. Low-lying stretches remained vulnerable to flooding as drains struggled to cope with the volume of rainwater. Authorities urged motorists to avoid inundated roads where possible and exercise caution while travelling during periods of intense rainfall.

Neighbouring districts are also expected to witness unsettled weather. The IMD has forecast thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, light to moderate rainfall and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph at isolated places in Thane. Palghar is also likely to receive light to moderate rainfall along with thundershowers as the monsoon remains active across the Konkan region.

Mumbai typically experiences frequent spells of heavy rainfall during the southwest monsoon, often leading to traffic congestion, waterlogging and delays to road and rail services. Weather officials have advised residents to keep track of the latest forecasts and warnings as rainfall intensity can change rapidly. With more showers expected during the day, civic agencies remain on alert to manage waterlogging and minimise disruptions across the city.
