Most 2021 Exit Polls Forecast TMC Win In Bengal, Missed 215-Seat Tally

Exit polls predicted close 2021 Bengal result but TMC won 215 seats, BJP 77.

Exit polls conducted during the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections showed a mixed record of accuracy, correctly identifying a closely fought contest but significantly missing the final margin and winner’s seat advantage, which turned out to be larger than many predicted for the Trinamool Congress.

Most major polling agencies projected a tight race between the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with some surveys suggesting a possible BJP edge or a hung assembly. Others indicated a narrow TMC lead, reflecting deep uncertainty in voter sentiment at the time.

However, the actual result showed a decisive victory for the TMC, which secured a comfortable majority, while the BJP fell well short of expectations. This created a clear gap between many exit poll projections and the final seat tally, especially those that forecast a much stronger BJP performance or a near-equal contest.

A key trend in the 2021 West Bengal exit polls was overestimation of BJP’s seat share. Several agencies projected the BJP-led alliance crossing or nearing the 100-seat mark, whereas the party ultimately won significantly fewer seats. At the same time, some polls underestimated the consolidation of anti-BJP votes in favour of the TMC in the final outcome.

Another noticeable pattern was wide variation across pollsters, with projections ranging from a close contest to a comfortable TMC victory. This inconsistency highlighted methodological challenges such as sampling limitations, regional diversity, and the difficulty of capturing late swing voters in a politically polarised environment.

Despite the errors in seat projections, exit polls were still partially accurate in capturing one important trend: the election was highly competitive in perception and intensity, even if the final result was not as close as many forecasts suggested. Analysts later noted that while exit polls can reflect voter mood, they are less reliable in translating that sentiment into precise seat arithmetic.

Overall, the 2021 West Bengal exit polls are seen as moderately inaccurate in numbers but partially correct in identifying the competitive nature of the contest, reinforcing the broader view that such surveys should be treated as indicators of trends rather than exact predictions.
