Monsoon Session: 100+ MPs Demand Judge’s Ouster in Shocking Corruption Scandal
Over 100 MPs sign motion to impeach Justice Varma for alleged corruption.
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju announced that over 100 MPs have signed a notice to move a motion in the Lok Sabha for the removal of Justice Yashwant Varma, meeting the threshold required for an impeachment proceeding. Speaking after an all-party meeting in New Delhi, Rijiju said the Business Advisory Committee will decide when the motion, targeting Varma for alleged judicial corruption, will be tabled during the Monsoon Session starting July 21.
The motion, requiring at least 100 signatures in the Lok Sabha or 50 in the Rajya Sabha, has garnered cross-party support, including from opposition parties, Rijiju noted. “Corruption in the judiciary is a serious concern for everybody,” he told PTI, emphasizing the urgency of addressing the issue. The government plans to bring the motion during the current session, though Rijiju refrained from confirming a specific timeline, pending approval from the Business Advisory Committee and the Chair.
The controversy stems from a March 2025 fire at Varma’s Delhi outhouse, where emergency services discovered burnt wads of currency. A committee of three high court judges, appointed by then-Chief Justice of India Sanjeev Khanna, indicted Varma, prompting Khanna to recommend his removal to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi after Varma refused to resign. Varma, now repatriated to the Allahabad High Court and barred from judicial duties, has challenged the committee’s findings in the Supreme Court, maintaining his innocence.
