MK Stalin Raises Concerns Over Loss Of 151 Medical Seats Under TVK Government

DMK president and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Wednesday criticised the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government over the transfer of 151 super-speciality medical seats from the State quota to the All India quota. Stalin accused the government of failing to protect Tamil Nadu’s interests in medical education and demanded a detailed explanation regarding the loss of the seats.
In a statement shared on social media, Stalin described the issue as a major setback for the state’s healthcare system. He said the 151 super-speciality seats could have helped produce more specialised doctors who would eventually serve patients in Tamil Nadu and contribute to strengthening the state’s medical infrastructure.
The DMK leader questioned the government’s approach to the legal proceedings concerning the seats and asked why the state administration did not pass a resolution in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly opposing the transfer to the All India quota. He also sought clarification on why the government did not challenge the Supreme Court’s May 29, 2026 order through an appeal.

Stalin alleged that the state’s legal handling of the matter reflected negligence and questioned the absence of government-appointed advocates during important stages of the proceedings. He also raised concerns over delays in appointing senior legal representatives to present Tamil Nadu’s case effectively before the court.
The former Chief Minister accused the government of adopting a “lackadaisical” approach and claimed that the state had failed to properly pursue the matter despite having what he described as a strong case. He questioned why the government did not make stronger efforts to retain the seats within the State quota.
Stalin also raised questions about the timing of the counselling process, asking why state counselling was conducted before the second phase of All India counselling and why all 151 super-speciality seats were declared vacant during the state counselling process. He demanded that the TVK government provide clear answers on the decisions taken and explain the circumstances that led to the transfer of the seats.
