MK Stalin Asks Party Cadre To Prepare For Elections That Could Arrive Anytime

Stalin urges DMK cadre to remain election-ready always.

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) president M.K. Stalin on Sunday suggested that fresh elections in Tamil Nadu could be held sooner than expected, telling party workers to remain prepared for a political contest that could come "in three months or six months." Addressing a gathering in Chennai following the induction of several AIADMK leaders, including former minister Benjamin, into the DMK, Stalin described the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government as a "minority" administration that, according to him, lacked the numbers to govern independently.

Speaking at the event, Stalin questioned the stability of the Vijay-led government, arguing that it did not secure the required legislative majority on its own. He claimed the TVK won 108 seats, falling short of the 118-seat majority mark in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, and was able to form the government only with the support of parties that had previously been part of the DMK-led alliance. He said the political situation remained fluid and urged party workers to stay prepared for any eventuality.

"Let us look at the reality. The present ruling party did not win a majority to form a stable government on its own strength," Stalin said. He further alleged that the government continued to function only because of support extended by parties whose voters had originally backed the DMK-led alliance. "The government runs only with the support of those who people actually voted wanting the DMK to form the government. It is only because of the tactical alignment and support of certain parties who were until recently part of our progressive alliance that this TVK vehicle is managing to move at all," he said.

Stalin's remarks came as he sought to energise the DMK cadre after the party's defeat in the recent Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, in which he also lost his own seat. The induction of former AIADMK leaders into the DMK was presented as evidence that the opposition party continues to attract support despite its electoral setback. He urged party workers to strengthen the organisation at the grassroots level and remain prepared for any political developments in the state.

The comments also signal the DMK's strategy of questioning the legitimacy and durability of the TVK-led government. While Stalin argued that the administration lacked an independent mandate, the ruling alliance has continued to function with the support of its coalition partners, allowing it to retain a majority in the Assembly. There has been no official indication from the government that early elections are under consideration.

Stalin's prediction of a possible early election adds a new dimension to Tamil Nadu's political landscape, although no constitutional or procedural steps have been initiated to dissolve the Assembly. Whether his remarks prove to be political messaging or foreshadow future developments remains uncertain. For now, the TVK-led government continues in office, while the DMK appears focused on rebuilding its organisation and preparing its cadre for any electoral challenge that may arise.
