Mehbooba Mufti Accuses BJP of Hypocrisy in Baba Bulleh Shah Shrine Vandalism Case
Mehbooba Mufti accuses BJP of double standards over vandalism at Baba Bulleh Shah shrine in Mussoorie.
Jammu and Kashmir People’s Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday condemned the vandalism of the Baba Bulleh Shah shrine in Mussoorie, accusing the BJP of double standards. She highlighted the contrast between the party’s ceremonial reception of Middle Eastern sheikhs abroad and its apparent silence on attacks against religious and cultural symbols at home.
In a post on X, Mehbooba Mufti wrote, “BJP leaders pose in mosques abroad and roll out red carpets for Middle Eastern sheikhs. But back home, they watch with glee as the shrine of Sufi poet Baba Bulleh Shah is vandalised.” She described this as deliberate hypocrisy, claiming it reflects a preference for symbolic destruction over addressing pressing social issues such as poverty, unemployment, and youth disenfranchisement.
The incident occurred on January 24, when right-wing Hindu activists reportedly trespassed onto the shrine premises late at night. According to police, the mob used iron rods and hammers to demolish parts of the shrine and destroy religious literature and books kept there, causing significant damage.

Mussoorie police have registered an FIR under relevant sections and are investigating the case. Three individuals—Hariom, Shivayun, and Shraddha—have been named, while authorities continue to examine video footage to identify other participants, estimated to be 25–30 persons.
The vandalism of the shrine has sparked outrage across social and political circles, with critics emphasizing the need to protect India’s cultural and religious heritage. Mehbooba Mufti’s comments underline broader concerns about rising intolerance and attacks on symbols of harmony in the country.
Authorities have assured that the investigation is ongoing and those responsible will be held accountable. The incident has reignited debates over the central government’s response to communal tensions and its approach toward safeguarding minority cultural sites.
