Meenakshi Natarajan: A Principled Leader Who Remains An Enigma Within Congress

Former MP's rise from student politics to Congress leadership.

Senior Congress leader Meenakshi Natarajan remains one of the party’s most respected yet understated figures, known for her principled approach to politics and long-standing commitment to organizational work. Despite holding several key positions within the Congress over the years, Natarajan has largely stayed away from political limelight and factional battles. She is known for leading a simple lifestyle and reportedly manages her personal expenses through the pension she receives as a former Member of Parliament and income generated from books she has authored.

A defining moment in Natarajan’s political journey came on August 20, 1998, during a National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) Girl Students Convention held in Delhi on the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. The event was attended by then Congress President Sonia Gandhi as the chief guest. According to party insiders, Sonia Gandhi was impressed by her interaction with Natarajan, who at the time was serving as an NSUI secretary and played a key role in welcoming and coordinating the event.

The impression she made during that occasion proved significant for her political career. Within a year, in 1999, Natarajan was appointed National President of the NSUI, the student wing of the Congress. Her rise within the organization was attributed to her effective communication skills, organizational abilities, and dedication to student issues. During her tenure, she worked extensively to strengthen the party’s student network across various states.

Originally belonging to a Tamil family that settled in Ratlam nearly a century ago, Natarajan comes from a modest background. Her father worked in a chemical factory, while her mother was a teacher. She became involved in student politics while studying at Indore University, where she joined the NSUI. Her simplicity, disciplined approach, and strong oratory skills soon helped her gain recognition among senior Congress leaders.

Following her successful stint as NSUI national president, Natarajan continued to climb the organizational ladder within the Congress. She was appointed President of the Madhya Pradesh Youth Congress in 2002 and later became a National Secretary of the Congress in 2008. Over the years, she has built a reputation as a leader focused on ideology and organizational development rather than electoral prominence, making her one of the party’s most intriguing and respected figures.
