Mayawati Says BJP, Congress Not Serious About Youth Issues, Appeals To Gen Z

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati on Tuesday urged students and members of Generation Z to stay away from the political agendas of both ruling and Opposition parties, arguing that neither side was genuinely focused on resolving issues affecting young people. Her remarks came amid continuing political tensions over student-related matters and disruptions in Parliament. Mayawati said young people should instead concentrate on identifying and finding solutions to their own concerns. In a statement shared on social media, Mayawati appealed to students and young people across the country not to become involved in what she described as the politics of either the ruling party or the Opposition.

She said political parties should not be allowed to use student concerns for their own advantage. According to Mayawati, the younger generation should remain focused on finding meaningful solutions to problems affecting their education, employment and future prospects. “My appeal to all students and young people, including Gen-Z, across the country is that they should stay completely away from the politics of both the ruling party and the opposition at this time, and focus entirely on solving their problems,” Mayawati said. She further urged young people not to get caught up in the political activities of the government or allow Opposition parties to use their concerns for political benefit.

The BSP chief also criticised both sides for allegedly politicising student issues rather than addressing them. She accused political parties of repeatedly raising different issues and using them to create confrontation, while failing to find meaningful solutions to the concerns being raised by students. According to Mayawati, the continued political disputes have contributed to disruptions in Parliament and prevented the legislature from functioning effectively. Mayawati said the younger generation should be cautious about becoming part of political confrontations that do not directly resolve their problems. Her appeal comes at a time when student-related issues have become part of wider political disagreements, with Opposition parties raising allegations concerning police action against protesting students and demanding statements from the government.

The ruling side, meanwhile, has continued to pursue its legislative agenda despite disruptions in Parliament. The BSP leader said her party had consistently stood with students and would continue to support them. She sought to distinguish the BSP’s position from what she described as attempts by other political parties to use student concerns for electoral or political purposes. Mayawati said the party would remain committed to issues affecting students and young people while encouraging them to focus on securing practical solutions. Her comments also come amid growing political attention around Generation Z, a demographic that includes many young voters and students. Education, employment opportunities, recruitment examinations, competitive exams and access to economic opportunities have emerged as important concerns for younger Indians.

Political parties have increasingly sought to engage with this section of the population, while Mayawati’s latest appeal asks young people to maintain distance from partisan politics. The BSP chief’s criticism extended to the functioning of Parliament, where political parties have remained divided over several issues. She accused both the ruling and Opposition camps of raising one issue after another and using them to prevent Parliament from functioning normally. In her view, such disruptions do little to address the underlying concerns of students and instead turn their problems into political subjects. Mayawati’s statement therefore combines an appeal to young people with a broader criticism of the country’s political establishment.

She argued that students and Gen Z should not allow either side of the political divide to dictate how their concerns are represented. Instead, she urged them to remain focused on their own problems and demand concrete solutions. The BSP supremo reiterated that her party would continue to stand with students while opposing what she described as political exploitation of their concerns. Her appeal comes as student issues remain intertwined with wider political confrontations in Parliament and outside it. By asking Gen Z to stay away from the politics of both the government and Opposition, Mayawati has positioned the BSP as a party seeking to support students while cautioning them against becoming instruments in broader political battles.
