Manipur Congress Criticizes NPP, Accuses Party of Fueling State Instability
Congress accuses NPP of fueling Manipur’s ethnic strife chaos.
Manipur Congress President Keisham Meghachandra unleashed a scathing critique of Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma’s National People’s Party (NPP), accusing it of playing a “major role in destroying the stability” of Manipur. The remarks, coincide with Sangma’s two-day visit to the ethnic strife-torn state, which Meghachandra branded as a calculated move to “revive the NDA’s weakened base” amid ongoing unrest.
Manipur has been reeling from ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities since May 2023, claiming over 260 lives and displacing thousands. Meghachandra, the Wangkhem constituency MLA, pointed fingers at the NPP, a key ally of the ruling BJP, alleging that their combined governance since 2017 has plunged the state into chaos. “The BJP and its ally NPP are two faces of the same coin,” he charged in a post on X, slamming their failure to restore peace, deliver justice, or protect Manipur’s unity.
Sangma, who arrived in Imphal on Thursday, met with civil society leaders, internally displaced persons, and Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, emphasizing the NPP’s commitment to peace and a democratically elected government. His visit comes at a turbulent time, with President’s Rule imposed following Chief Minister N. Biren Singh’s resignation and the state assembly in suspended animation until 2027. However, Meghachandra dismissed Sangma’s agenda, claiming the NPP chief’s trip is a strategic bid to bolster the BJP-led NDA’s crumbling influence in the state.

“The people of Manipur have clearly rejected the BJP-led NDA, whose years of misrule, corruption, and divisive governance have pushed the state into unrest and instability,” Meghachandra declared. He accused the NDA of fostering division and neglecting the state’s diverse communities, exacerbating the ethnic clashes that have left deep scars.
Positioning the Congress as the people’s champion, Meghachandra vowed to fight for democratic restoration and rebuild “the true idea of Manipur.” As tensions simmer and Sangma’s visit draws scrutiny, the Congress’s sharp rebuke underscores the deepening political fault lines in a state grappling with grief, displacement, and a desperate yearning for peace.
