Malvinder Kang Raises Concerns Over SIR, Cites Bihar And Bengal Electoral Experiences

AAP leader Malvinder Kang warns that SIR process should not mirror Bihar and Bengal situations in Punjab.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Member of Parliament Malvinder Singh Kang has raised strong concerns over the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, warning against what he described as possible attempts to replicate controversial voter-list practices seen in other states such as Bihar and West Bengal. His remarks come amid heightened political debate in Punjab over the timing and implementation of the electoral roll revision exercise.

Kang argued that the electoral process must remain fully transparent and free from any form of manipulation, stressing that voter rights are the foundation of democracy. He alleged that if the revision is not conducted carefully, it could risk wrongful deletions or additions in the voter list, which may ultimately impact the fairness of upcoming elections in the state. His statement reflects growing unease among political parties in Punjab regarding the Election Commission’s revision drive.

The AAP leader further pointed to past concerns raised in states like Bihar and West Bengal, where large-scale revisions reportedly resulted in significant changes to electoral rolls. According to Kang, such examples highlight the need for greater scrutiny and safeguards to ensure that eligible voters are not excluded and that no political advantage is derived from the process.

He also emphasized that Punjab, being politically sensitive ahead of its next assembly election expected in early 2027, requires a particularly cautious approach. Kang urged electoral authorities to maintain strict neutrality and provide adequate opportunities for verification so that citizens are not unfairly impacted by administrative errors or procedural gaps in the revision process.

The issue has become part of a broader political debate in the state, with multiple parties questioning the timing and intent behind the SIR exercise. While the Election Commission maintains that such revisions are routine and aimed at ensuring accurate voter lists, opposition leaders continue to demand greater transparency and clarity in implementation.

As discussions intensify, Kang’s remarks add to the ongoing scrutiny of electoral processes in Punjab, highlighting the sensitive balance between administrative reform and safeguarding democratic participation.
