Mallikarjun Kharge Clarifies Remarks From Kerala Rally, Expresses Regret for Misunderstanding
Kharge apologizes to Gujaratis, says Kerala speech comments were misinterpreted and never meant to offend.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday sought to clarify and apologise for remarks from a recent campaign speech in Kerala that sparked political backlash in Gujarat. Writing on the social media platform X, the veteran leader said his comments were being “deliberately misinterpreted” and expressed regret for any offence caused to the people of Gujarat.
Kharge emphasised that he holds “the highest respect for Gujarat” and never intended to disparage its citizens. He said his statements during a rally in Idukki district were meant to praise the local population’s literacy and discernment, and that contrasts drawn with other regions had been taken out of context.
The controversy originated from Kharge’s comparison between Kerala and other states, suggesting that while voters in Kerala were too discerning to be misled, it might be possible for political leaders to influence voters in Gujarat or elsewhere. These comments triggered immediate condemnation from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which accused the Congress chief of belittling an entire state.

Harsh Sanghavi, Deputy Chief Minister of Gujarat, criticised Kharge for allegedly insulting a state that produced iconic leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and which has been regarded as a model for modern development. BJP national spokesperson Sudhansu Trivedi echoed the criticism, questioning the logic behind Kharge’s statements and alleging that the Congress was attempting “divide and rule” tactics ahead of the Kerala polls.
Trivedi highlighted the legacy of leaders from Gujarat and other parts of India, including Uttar Pradesh and North India, to challenge Kharge’s implication that certain regions’ voters are more discerning than others. The BJP’s response intensified calls for clarification and accountability from the Congress leadership.
Kharge’s clarification seeks to contain the fallout while reaffirming his respect for all states, signalling an effort to balance campaigning in Kerala with sensitivity to political sentiments in Gujarat. The episode underscores the high stakes of election rhetoric and the scrutiny national leaders face when discussing regional electorates.
