Mahua Moitra Security Cover In Krishnanagar Extended By Calcutta HC Until November 30

Mahua Moitra Security Cover Extended

The Calcutta High Court has extended security protection for Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra during her visits to the Krishnanagar constituency until November 30, following allegations that she was subjected to egg-pelting and harassment during earlier visits. A single bench of Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya directed the Superintendent of Police, Krishnanagar, to continue providing two police personnel whenever Moitra visits the constituency, extending an earlier arrangement ordered on September 1. The latest direction comes amid renewed attention to security arrangements after an egg-pelting incident was reported during Moitra’s visit to Tehatta in Nadia district earlier this month.

Justice Bhattacharyya also directed that Moitra’s petition be placed before the division bench headed by Chief Justice Ravindra V Ghuge. The direction was issued in accordance with an earlier order concerning a public interest litigation relating to incidents of egg-pelting in West Bengal. The court had initially ordered the security arrangement for a limited period, directing the Krishnanagar police district to deploy two personnel whenever the MP entered her constituency for political or public outreach activities. The latest order extends that protection through November 30.

The security order followed allegations that Moitra had faced harassment during visits to Krishnanagar. On September 16, she was reportedly targeted with eggs while leaving a party meeting in the Tehatta area. Reports said the incident occurred in the presence of police personnel, prompting Moitra to question whether the court-directed security arrangements were being properly implemented. She had earlier informed police about her visit, according to reports, while a nodal officer had been appointed in connection with the court’s security directions.

Following the September 16 incident, Moitra approached the Calcutta High Court alleging police inaction and seeking relief over the security arrangements. Her counsel argued that police had failed to adequately protect her during the Tehatta incident, where members of a rival political group were alleged to have waved black flags and thrown eggs at her vehicle. The petition brought the implementation of the earlier court order back before the high court, with the MP seeking further directions concerning her safety during constituency visits.

The court’s latest direction does not amount to a finding on the allegations against those involved in the reported incidents. Instead, it continues the specific police protection ordered for Moitra while the related proceedings remain before the court. The direction also places her petition before the division bench in the broader context of the PIL concerning egg-pelting incidents, potentially bringing the individual security dispute within a wider judicial consideration of such incidents in the state.

Moitra, who represents the Krishnanagar Lok Sabha constituency, will therefore continue to receive the court-directed security cover during visits there until November 30, unless the order is modified or replaced earlier. The extension comes as the high court continues to deal with proceedings arising from allegations of harassment and egg-pelting involving political figures in West Bengal. The latest order keeps the two-person police protection arrangement in place while the matter moves before the appropriate division bench.
