Mahesh Dixit Appointed Intelligence Bureau Chief; Replaces Outgoing Director Tapan Kumar Deka
Mahesh Dixit appointed Intelligence Bureau Chief; takes two-year term ahead.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has appointed senior IPS officer Mahesh Dixit as the next Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), India's premier internal intelligence agency. A 1993-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Telangana cadre, Dixit will assume charge after the completion of outgoing Director Tapan Kumar Deka's tenure and will serve a two-year term. The appointment was approved by the ACC headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Mahesh Dixit is currently serving as the Special Director of the Intelligence Bureau, one of the agency's highest-ranking positions. During his career, he has held several important assignments in intelligence and internal security and is regarded as one of the country's most experienced intelligence officers. His elevation to the top post comes after years of service in sensitive national security and intelligence-related roles.
The Intelligence Bureau is India's principal domestic intelligence agency and is responsible for gathering intelligence related to internal security, counter-terrorism, counter-intelligence, surveillance of threats to national security and coordination with central and state security agencies. As Director, Dixit will oversee the organisation's intelligence operations and strategic planning while working closely with the Ministry of Home Affairs and other security agencies.

Dixit succeeds Tapan Kumar Deka, who has led the Intelligence Bureau during a period marked by heightened focus on counter-terrorism, cyber security, espionage prevention and intelligence coordination. As Special Director, Dixit has already been closely associated with several key operational and administrative functions within the organisation, providing continuity in leadership at the country's top intelligence agency.
The appointment comes at a time when intelligence agencies continue to face evolving security challenges, including cyber threats, cross-border terrorism, organised crime and emerging technologies that require enhanced intelligence capabilities. As Director, Dixit is expected to play a central role in strengthening intelligence gathering, inter-agency coordination and national security preparedness.
With nearly three decades of experience in policing and intelligence, Mahesh Dixit's appointment reflects the government's emphasis on experienced leadership in one of India's most critical security institutions. He is expected to formally take over the role upon the completion of Tapan Kumar Deka's tenure, beginning a two-year term at the helm of the Intelligence Bureau.
