Land for Jobs Scam: Delhi Court Defers Order on Framing Charges to December 4

Delhi court to decide on framing charges against Lalu Yadav family in land-for-job scam.

A Delhi court is scheduled to pronounce its order on Thursday regarding the framing of charges against RJD chief and former Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, his family members, and others in the alleged land-for-job scam. The decision will determine whether there is sufficient evidence to formally proceed with the trial.

The case was filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which had submitted chargesheets against Lalu Yadav, his wife and former Bihar Chief Minister Rabri Devi, their son and former Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav, along with several associates. The court had earlier deferred the order on November 10.

The prosecution alleges that appointments in the Group-D category of the West Central Zone of the Railways, based in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, were made between 2004 and 2009 during Lalu Yadav’s tenure as Railway Minister. In return, candidates allegedly transferred land parcels to Lalu’s family or associates.

The CBI claims that these appointments violated official norms and involved benami property transactions, amounting to criminal misconduct and conspiracy. According to the investigation, these appointments were part of a larger scheme to exchange government jobs for land, allegedly enriching the accused family members.

The accused have denied all allegations, asserting that the case is politically motivated. Their legal team has argued that there is no concrete evidence directly linking the transfers and appointments to the family, requesting the court to dismiss the charges.

Observers note that the outcome of Thursday’s hearing could have significant political ramifications, given the prominence of Lalu Prasad Yadav and his family in Bihar politics. The decision will set the stage for either a full-fledged trial or dismissal of the charges.
