Kolkata Police Suspend Two Senior Officers Over Remarks Targeting Suvendu Adhikari
Two Kolkata cops suspended over remarks against Adhikari.
Two senior officers of the Kolkata Police have been suspended following an internal inquiry into alleged controversial social media activity and remarks made against Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition at the time and now the Chief Minister of West Bengal. The action was taken after the police department found violations related to the officers' online conduct, a senior police official said. The suspended officers have been identified as Deputy Commissioner of Police III (North Division) Bidhan Saha and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Port Division II) Partha Pratim Das.
According to officials, the suspension followed a review of their social media-related activities, with the department stating that police personnel, particularly senior officers, must maintain caution while using online platforms. A senior Kolkata Police officer said that any content posted by members of the force that could affect public perception or impact the image of the organisation is examined according to established rules. "Police personnel, especially senior officers, have been advised to exercise caution while using social media platforms.
Any content that may adversely affect public perception or the image of the force is examined as per rules," the officer told news agency PTI. Sources said the disciplinary action was linked to alleged remarks made by the two officers in a police WhatsApp group in 2025. According to the sources, one of the suspended officers allegedly made objectionable comments against Suvendu Adhikari, who was then serving as the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly. The other officer reportedly supported those comments, leading to complaints and a subsequent departmental inquiry. Following the complaints, the Kolkata Police initiated an investigation into the matter.

After reviewing the findings, authorities decided to suspend the two officers, with further departmental proceedings expected to follow. Officials have not disclosed additional details about the nature of the alleged remarks or the evidence examined during the inquiry. The development comes after Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Kumar Nand had earlier instructed officers to exercise restraint while making public statements or sharing content on social media. Sources said the commissioner had warned personnel that inappropriate communication by members of the force could have wider social consequences and affect the credibility of the police department.
The suspension highlights the increasing scrutiny faced by government officials and law enforcement personnel over their activity on digital platforms. Police departments across India have issued guidelines advising officers to avoid sharing content that could be seen as political, controversial or damaging to institutional neutrality. The Kolkata Police is expected to continue the disciplinary process against the two officers as per departmental rules. The case also underscores the department's emphasis on maintaining professional conduct among senior personnel, particularly when their public statements or online activity may influence perceptions of the force.
