Kodagu Homestay Owner Arrested for Withholding Information in US Tourist Sexual Assault Case
Kodagu homestay owner seeks bail after withholding information in tourist assault case.
A homestay owner in Karnataka’s Kodagu district has approached a sessions court seeking bail in connection with a case involving the alleged sexual assault of a foreign tourist by one of his employees. The case has drawn significant attention due to the serious nature of the allegations and concerns over safety standards in the tourism sector in the region.
According to police reports, the incident occurred on April 12 when a worker at the homestay allegedly spiked the drink of a US tourist before sexually assaulting her. Following the complaint and initial investigation, the homestay owner was arrested on April 22 for allegedly withholding information related to the incident. The accused employee, a resident of Jharkhand, has been booked on charges of rape and criminal intimidation.
The owner, who runs a well-known homestay in South Kodagu, has now filed a bail petition before the sessions court. During the proceedings, the court initially directed that the victim be included as a party to the bail application. However, this direction was later reversed on April 25, with the court ruling that the victim’s presence or participation was not necessary for deciding the bail plea.

The case has also prompted administrative action, with the Karnataka tourism department cancelling the registration of the homestay after the incident came to light. Authorities have stated that the move was taken as part of stricter enforcement of safety regulations for tourists, particularly in private accommodation facilities across the state.
As the investigation continues, the matter has raised wider concerns about accountability, guest safety, and regulatory oversight in homestays and tourism establishments. The court is expected to hear the bail application in the coming days while police continue their probe into the incident.
