Kiren Rijiju Raises Privilege Issue Over Rahul Gandhi's Remarks On Home Minister

A heated exchange broke out in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday after Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi accused Union Home Minister Amit Shah of being responsible for alleged police action during student protests in the national capital. The remarks triggered strong objections from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju accusing Gandhi of making serious allegations without evidence and demanding an apology from him in the House.

The controversy emerged during the debate on the anti-paper leak bill, when Gandhi raised issues related to student protests and alleged police excesses. He claimed that the Home Minister had authorised the use of force against protesting students, leading to angry reactions from the treasury benches. BJP members objected to the remarks and demanded that the allegations be withdrawn.

Responding to Gandhi’s comments, Rijiju questioned the basis of the allegations and said that such claims could not be made without supporting evidence. He urged the Speaker to remove the remarks from the proceedings and said that Gandhi, being the Leader of Opposition, should be more responsible while making statements inside Parliament.

“How can you say this? You are the LoP. On what basis are you saying this? Who told you this? What you said is very wrong,” Rijiju said while challenging Gandhi’s allegations. He further said that accusing someone of ordering action against protesters was a serious matter and described it as a breach of the privileges and responsibilities associated with the position of the Leader of Opposition.

The exchange between the government and Opposition benches led to intense disruptions in the House, with members from both sides raising slogans and engaging in heated arguments. The situation escalated as neither side backed down from their positions, forcing the Speaker to adjourn the proceedings for half an hour.

The government maintained that Gandhi’s allegations were baseless and demanded an apology, while the Opposition continued to raise concerns over the handling of student protests. The confrontation added to the political tensions in Parliament during the discussion on the examination-related legislation aimed at addressing concerns over paper leaks.
