Kharge, Rahul Gandhi Lead Powerful Call to Safeguard Constitutional Values on Samvidhan Diwas

Opposition leaders issue dire warning on Constitution Day.

On the solemn occasion of the 76th Constitution Day, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, delivered an impassioned nationwide appeal, positioning himself as the first defender against any perceived or real threat to India’s Constitution, which he repeatedly described as the sole protective shield for the country’s poor, downtrodden, and historically marginalised communities who have long faced systemic exclusion and injustice.

In a meticulously worded statement released on X, Gandhi characterised the Constitution not merely as a legal document but as a sacred, living promise forged in the crucible of the freedom struggle—a guarantee of equality before the law, respect for individual dignity, and delivery of social, economic, and political justice to every citizen irrespective of faith, caste, region, language, gender, or economic standing, warning that any weakening of its core provisions would directly imperil the rights of the weakest sections of society.

Reiterating that the safety of every Indian’s fundamental rights hinges exclusively on the continued strength and inviolability of the Constitution, the Congress leader declared the defence of this foundational text to be his highest personal and political duty, while simultaneously calling upon millions of citizens across the country to publicly pledge that they would collectively resist and thwart any attempt—covert or overt—to amend, dilute, or subvert its spirit and letter.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, in a separate but equally forceful message, invoked the immortal words of Dr B.R. Ambedkar—the chief architect of the Constitution—to remind the nation that the document is far more than a set of rules; it embodies a transformative way of life rooted in the eternal values of justice, liberty, equality, fraternity, secularism, and democratic socialism, and paid glowing tributes to the entire pantheon of Constituent Assembly luminaries, including Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, Dr Rajendra Prasad, Sarojini Naidu, and countless others who sacrificed to gift India the world’s longest written constitution.

As the country marks Samvidhan Diwas on November 26—the historic date in 1949 when the Constituent Assembly finally adopted the Constitution after nearly three years of exhaustive deliberation—both senior Congress leaders urged every citizen, institution, and political formation to renew their uncompromising commitment to safeguarding democratic freedoms, preserving India’s secular and pluralistic ethos, and strengthening the unbreakable threads of national unity, communal harmony, and brotherhood that alone can ensure the Republic’s survival and prosperity in the face of emerging challenges.
