Kharge Raises Concerns Over Party's Silence On Haldwani Purification Row

Kharge raises concerns over party's silence on purification row.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge expressed disappointment with senior party leaders who, according to sources, did not publicly condemn the “purification” ritual conducted at a venue where he had addressed a rally in Uttarakhand. Kharge raised the issue during the Congress Working Committee meeting in the national capital, saying he was hurt by the silence of several leaders. The incident has since become a political flashpoint, with the Congress describing it as an affront to Dalit dignity.

Kharge had addressed a “Vijay Shankhnaad” rally at Ramlila Maidan in Haldwani on August 8. Two days later, members of the Shri Ram Sena conducted a shuddhikaran havan, or purification ritual, at the same venue. The Congress alleged that the act reflected an anti-Dalit mindset and claimed that the organisation involved had links with the BJP and RSS. The BJP, however, distanced itself from the ritual and condemned the incident.

During the CWC meeting, Kharge reportedly did not single out any particular leader while expressing his dissatisfaction. However, his remarks and demeanour indicated that he expected stronger support from senior members of his party. Congress general secretary KC Venugopal later described the incident as unacceptable and condemnable, while alleging that it reflected the mindset of the BJP. The controversy has also intensified discussions within the Congress over how the party should respond to incidents involving caste and social discrimination.

Kharge subsequently raised the issue in Parliament during the final day of the Monsoon Session. He said the purification of the stage had made him feel the impact of untouchability and humiliation. Kharge maintained that he did not want to turn the matter into a political issue and said he had never sought special protection because of his Dalit identity. He demanded that a case be registered under the law dealing with untouchability and that those responsible for the ritual be arrested.

Responding to Kharge in the Rajya Sabha, Union Minister JP Nadda described the incident as unfortunate and said BJP members were not involved in it. Nadda also assured the House that the matter would be looked into. The BJP's position contrasts with the Congress's criticism, as the opposition party has continued to argue that the incident deserves a stronger legal and political response.

The controversy comes as Kharge continues to emphasise issues of social equality and discrimination in his public interventions. The Congress has sought to use the Haldwani incident to highlight concerns surrounding caste-based practices, while the BJP has maintained that it was not connected to the ritual. Kharge's comments about the silence within his own party have added another dimension to the dispute, putting the spotlight not only on the incident itself but also on how Congress leaders respond to such controversies.
