Kerala Introduces Free Bus Travel For Women On KSRTC Ordinary Buses
Kerala launches free KSRTC bus travel scheme for women statewide.
The Kerala government on Monday launched a free bus travel scheme for women on KSRTC ordinary buses, marking a major social welfare initiative under the state’s public transport system. The programme was inaugurated at the Thampanoor Central Bus Terminal in Thiruvananthapuram amid the presence of senior ministers, officials, and transport department representatives.
The scheme was formally inaugurated by Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan, who described it as a key step toward women’s economic empowerment. He said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to supporting daily commuters, particularly women, by reducing travel costs and improving access to public services across Kerala.
The inaugural journey operated from Thampanoor to the State Secretariat, covering a short distance and symbolically marking the rollout of the programme. Senior officials including Transport Minister C. P. John and other departmental heads travelled on the first service, which was operated by veteran KSRTC driver V. P. Sheela, one of the corporation’s first women drivers.

Under the scheme, women passengers will be able to travel free of cost on KSRTC Ordinary category buses, which make up a significant portion of the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation fleet. Conductors will issue zero-fare tickets starting from 9 a.m. daily, formally recording journeys while eliminating ticket charges for eligible passengers.
Officials noted that the initiative is expected to benefit thousands of daily commuters, with many women estimating monthly savings that could ease household financial pressures. The scheme also extends benefits to members of the transgender community, broadening its social welfare scope and inclusivity.
However, the launch also saw political debate, with opposition parties criticising the decision to limit free travel to ordinary buses rather than all KSRTC services. Despite the criticism, government representatives described the programme as a landmark step in strengthening public transport and enhancing women’s participation in the state’s economic and social mobility.
