Kerala CM V.D. Satheesan Orders Strict Action Over Fake Campaign Targeting PK Sreemathy

Kerala authorities have initiated steps for strict action over an alleged fake online campaign targeting CPI(M) Central Committee member and former Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy. The development followed a complaint by Sreemathy alleging that fabricated reports and social media posts falsely accused her of receiving an MLA family pension through fraudulent means. The complaint has led to demands for legal action against those responsible for spreading the claims.

Sreemathy submitted a written complaint to the Chief Minister, following which it was forwarded to the state Home Department for necessary action. The intervention came after details emerged suggesting that the allegations were based on a case of mistaken identity. Officials are now looking into the matter, while legal steps are being considered against those involved in circulating the misleading information.

The controversy reportedly began after an RTI response containing details of pensions paid to former MLAs and their families was circulated online. The document included a reference to a family pension received by another P.K. Sreemathy, the late wife of freedom fighter and former Congress leader P.R. Krishnan, who had served as an MLA. The pension was reportedly linked to her husband’s service and was discontinued after her death in February 2020.

The two separate entries in the RTI document were allegedly presented online as if they referred to the same person, resulting in accusations against the CPI(M) leader. Krishnan’s son Ajith clarified that the pension recipient was a different individual and that no such pension had been received for several years. He suggested that the confusion may have resulted from the similarity in names or from an attempt to mislead the public.

Sreemathy has strongly reacted to the allegations, stating that she would not forgive those responsible for spreading false claims and that she would pursue defamation proceedings. She said several people involved in sharing the reports had contacted her and offered apologies. Leaders from different political parties also expressed support for her, as the issue has now shifted from an online controversy to a broader debate over misinformation and accountability in digital spaces.
