Kashmir Floods: Rains Shut Schools, Block Srinagar-Jammu Highway
Rains swell rivers in Kashmir, shutting schools and blocking the Srinagar-Jammu highway.
Relentless rainfall has pushed Kashmir’s rivers and streams to alarming levels, forcing authorities to take drastic measures. The Srinagar-Jammu national highway, a critical lifeline, is closed due to landslides, shooting stones, and severe waterlogging at multiple points, stranding travellers and disrupting transport.
Officials report that water levels in the Jhelum River and its tributaries, though still below the danger mark, have risen by three feet since the downpour began on Tuesday. South and central Kashmir, including Srinagar, are witnessing significant swelling in water bodies. With the weather department predicting more rain in the next 24 hours, the situation remains tense.
As a precaution, all schools and colleges across the Kashmir Valley have been shut down for the day. “Due to the inclement weather, educational institutions will remain closed on September 3, 2025, to ensure safety,” authorities confirmed.
