Kannur Delegates Blame Vijayan, MV Govindan For Poll Loss At Kerala CPI(M) Meet
Kannur delegates raise concerns over leadership following the electoral setback.
The CPI(M)’s extended state committee meeting in Kerala has seen delegates from the party’s stronghold of Kannur raise questions over the leadership’s handling of the party’s recent electoral defeat. The sharp criticism was directed at the draft rectification report presented by state secretary M.V. Govindan, particularly its emphasis on failures at the lower organisational levels. Kannur delegates argued that ordinary party workers could not be held responsible for decisions taken by the state leadership.
The criticism later received support from delegates from Kollam, indicating that concerns extended beyond Kannur. Delegates questioned the logic of asking the rank and file to undertake self-correction when those at the top had not accepted responsibility for key decisions. They also criticised what they described as growing parliamentary ambitions among senior leaders and the emergence of personality-centred politics during the party’s prolonged period in power.
Several issues linked to candidate selection and electoral strategy also came under discussion. Delegates questioned the omission of the Taliparamba candidature controversy from the draft report, while referring to the decisions involving K.K. Shailaja and A.N. Shamseer. They also alleged that different standards were being applied to senior leaders and ordinary workers, with those close to the leadership receiving protection while others faced criticism.

The wider organisational condition of the CPI(M) also featured prominently in the discussions. Delegates pointed to the erosion of the party’s traditional vote base, declining active membership and weakening support from mass organisations. They also highlighted the leadership’s inability to engage directly with people and effectively communicate its political position. Attempts to portray central-agency and Enforcement Directorate investigations involving Pinarayi Vijayan and his family as a major challenge reportedly failed to generate significant sympathy among delegates.
The discussions have placed former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and M.V. Govindan under indirect pressure, although the criticism was not framed solely as personal attacks. Delegates argued that repeated electoral setbacks had been preceded by warnings that were not acted upon and that the present crisis reflected failures within the leadership. The CPI(M)-led Left has failed to win a subsequent election since the 2021 Assembly polls, culminating in a severe setback in the latest Assembly elections.
The three-day meeting is scheduled to conclude on Tuesday, when the discussions are expected to be summed up. Attention will be on whether the criticism from the grassroots intensifies and whether the party leadership is held accountable for the electoral defeat. The central question will be whether the concerns raised by Kannur and other delegates lead to significant changes at the top or remain part of the party’s broader rectification process.
