Kamal Haasan Seeks Immediate Implementation Of Women’s Reservation In Parliament, Assemblies
Kamal Haasan urges immediate women’s reservation, opposing its linkage with delimitation process.
Actor-politician Kamal Haasan has called for the immediate implementation of 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and State Assemblies, while strongly opposing any linkage of the measure with the proposed delimitation process. His remarks come amid continuing political debate over the fall of a constitutional amendment bill tied to women’s representation.
Reacting to the defeat of the delimitation-linked Constitution amendment proposal in Parliament, Haasan said that women’s reservation should not be delayed further. He argued that the quota must be implemented immediately within the existing strength of the Lok Sabha and State legislatures, without waiting for changes in constituency boundaries.
Haasan also supported a Private Member’s Bill introduced by Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) Rajya Sabha MP P. Wilson, which seeks to implement women’s reservation independently of delimitation. He said the focus should remain on political empowerment rather than procedural delays.

In a post on social media platform X, Haasan further suggested extending the freeze on delimitation until 2051. He argued that such an extension would allow states more time to achieve population stabilisation through improved education, healthcare, and employment opportunities, particularly for women. According to him, these measures are essential for long-term social and demographic balance.
Raising concerns over regional equity, Haasan warned that linking women’s reservation with delimitation could disadvantage states such as Tamil Nadu, which have prioritised population control and social development. He said that states which have already made progress in women-centric policies should not face reduced political representation as a consequence.
Haasan, founder of the political party Makkal Needhi Maiam, also urged the Union government to convene a special session of Parliament after the ongoing state elections to pass legislation ensuring immediate implementation of women’s reservation. He added that the Centre should take proactive steps to avoid further delay in granting political representation to women. His statement adds to the broader national debate over women’s reservation and delimitation, an issue that has sparked sharp political disagreement between ruling and opposition parties across the country.
