Kalyan Banerjee Faces Suspension Over Comments On Women Parliamentarians In Lok Sabha

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee was suspended from the Lok Sabha for the remainder of the Monsoon Session on Wednesday over allegations that he used "unsavoury" language against women MPs during a heated exchange inside the House chamber. The suspension was announced after presiding officer Krishna Prasad Tenneti referred to a complaint submitted to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla by several members.

Tenneti said the alleged remarks had affected the dignity of the House and asked Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal to move a resolution seeking action against Banerjee. The resolution was passed through a voice vote amid protests by Opposition members over the NEET paper leak controversy and other issues. Following the adoption of the resolution, Banerjee was directed to leave the House premises. The Lok Sabha was later adjourned for the day amid continued sloganeering.

The action followed a heated exchange involving Banerjee and some former TMC colleagues who have recently joined the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI). The disagreement took place inside the Lok Sabha chamber after the House was adjourned following Opposition protests. The NCPI MPs involved in the confrontation included Mitali Bagh, Shatabdi Roy and Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar. The exact trigger behind the exchange was not immediately clear.

Several Opposition leaders intervened in an attempt to calm the situation. After some MPs sought clarification about the incident, Banerjee left the chamber. Later, Bagh, Dastidar and other NCPI members met Speaker Om Birla in his chamber, reportedly to raise concerns regarding the incident. The suspension comes against the backdrop of a major political shift within the TMC’s Lok Sabha strength. Around 20 TMC MPs broke away from the party after its defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections and joined the NCPI, a registered but unrecognised political party.

The breakaway MPs have since been seated separately from TMC members in the Lok Sabha and have expressed support for the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The incident added further tension to an already heated Monsoon Session of Parliament, which has witnessed repeated disruptions over issues including alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG examination process. Opposition parties have continued to demand accountability from the government, while debates over parliamentary conduct have also intensified.

Parliamentary rules allow the House to take action against members whose conduct is considered inappropriate or disruptive. The suspension means Banerjee will not be able to participate in Lok Sabha proceedings for the remaining days of the current session, which is scheduled to conclude on August 13. The TMC has not yet issued a detailed response to the suspension, while further political reactions are expected as the controversy continues.
