Japan Signals Caution On Sending Warships To Strait Of Hormuz

Japan has set an "extremely high" threshold for deploying warships to secure the Strait of Hormuz, despite U.S. President Donald Trump's recent appeals for international naval support amid escalating conflict with Iran. A senior Japanese policy adviser, Takayuki Kobayashi, the policy chief of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), made the remarks during a political debate on public broadcaster NHK on Sunday, March 15, 2026. Kobayashi emphasized that under existing Japanese laws, deployment remains legally possible but demands utmost caution given the ongoing hostilities.

"Legally speaking, we do not rule out the possibility, but given the current situation in which this conflict is ongoing, I believe this is something that must be considered with great caution," Kobayashi stated, highlighting Tokyo's reluctance to entangle its Self-Defense Forces directly in the U.S.-Iran war now in its third week.

Japan's position reflects its pacifist constitution and historical aversion to offensive military roles, prioritizing energy security through the Hormuz chokepoint—which carries 20% of global oil—over combat involvement. Prime Minister Takaichi's administration faces domestic pressure to protect imports amid oil price surges, yet public opinion overwhelmingly opposes overseas deployments.

Trump's March 14 call for allies including Japan to send vessels follows U.S. strikes on Iranian targets and mine threats disrupting shipping, but Tokyo prioritizes diplomacy, urging de-escalation via backchannels with Tehran. This stance aligns with responses from other requested nations like China and European powers, complicating Trump's burden-sharing strategy and underscoring limits to alliance cohesion in the crisis.
