Jammu And Kashmir Sees Zero Terror Fatalities In May After Three Decades

J&K reports no terror-related fatality in May.

The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir recorded no terror-related fatalities in the month of May for the first time in over three decades, marking a notable development in the region’s security landscape, according to data compiled by the South Asia Terrorism Portal (SATP). The SATP data indicates that while 12 people have died in terror-related incidents in Jammu and Kashmir so far this year, including three in January, six in February, two in March and one in April, no fatalities were reported in May.

The overall toll includes 10 terrorists and one security personnel among the dead. The long-term dataset cited by SATP highlights the scale of violence the region has witnessed in previous decades, with May historically recording fatalities even during comparatively calmer years. For instance, 14 deaths were recorded in May 2025, seven in 2024, 14 in 2023, 38 in 2022, and significantly higher numbers in earlier years, reflecting a steady decline over time.

Security experts attribute the absence of fatalities in May to sustained counter-insurgency operations and an improved anti-infiltration grid along the Line of Control and International Border. Officials note that May has traditionally been a sensitive month due to the reopening of mountain passes after winter, which often facilitates attempted infiltration.

According to security officials, intensified operations have contributed to weakening militant networks on the ground. They claim that local recruitment has dropped to very low levels and infiltration attempts are being more effectively intercepted. They also assert that the operational capability of major militant groups has been significantly degraded through targeted actions against leadership structures.

Former Jammu and Kashmir police chief S P Vaid said that sustained efforts by security forces have played a major role in reducing militant recruitment and improving overall security conditions in the region. In a separate development reported on the same day, security forces detained a 22-year-old man from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir after he allegedly crossed the Line of Control in the Uri sector, reportedly linked to a cross-border social media relationship.

The Army also foiled an alleged infiltration attempt in another incident in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, detaining three individuals. While officials view the zero-fatality month as a positive indicator, security agencies continue to maintain heightened vigilance, noting that infiltration attempts and isolated security incidents still persist in the region despite the improved overall trend.
