Jairam Ramesh Says Pakistan's Reported US-Iran Mediation Role is a Severe Setback for India

Congress says Pakistan's reported US-Iran mediation role exposes India's major diplomatic failures.

The Indian National Congress on Tuesday said that reports suggesting Pakistan may be acting as a mediator in the ongoing West Asia conflict would mark a “severe setback” for India if proven true. The opposition party raised concerns over India’s diplomatic standing amid the evolving geopolitical situation.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh stated that several international media reports indicate Pakistan could be serving as an intermediary between the United States and Israel on one side, and Iran on the other. He argued that such a development would reflect a diplomatic setback for India despite its recent military achievements.

Ramesh noted that while India recorded “undoubted military successes” during Operation Sindoor, Pakistan has gained an edge in diplomatic engagement and narrative-building in the aftermath. He claimed that Islamabad’s international positioning has improved significantly over the past year.

The Congress leader further said Pakistan, which had been grappling with political, economic, and global challenges, has now regained relevance on the international stage. He also alleged growing proximity between Pakistan’s establishment and Donald Trump, pointing to recent interactions at the White House.

Criticising the government, Ramesh targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his recent diplomatic decisions, including a visit to Israel shortly before the escalation of hostilities. He described the move as a “disastrous choice” that, according to him, reduced India’s potential role as a mediator in the conflict.

Meanwhile, Trump said the United States is in contact with a senior Iranian figure in an effort to negotiate an end to the conflict, although Iran has denied any such talks. The ongoing hostilities began after joint US-Israel strikes on Iran in late February, triggering retaliatory actions and raising concerns of a broader regional escalation.
