Jairam Ramesh Accuses PM Modi–Shah of Systematically Subverting India’s Constitution
Jairam Ramesh launches blistering Constitution Day attack.
In a scathing Constitution Day statement, senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah of systematically subverting the constitutional principles, provisions, and practices through calculated and sustained actions that undermine the very foundation of India’s democratic framework.
Ramesh categorically asserted that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) played no role whatsoever in the historic making of the Constitution, pointing out that while the Constituent Assembly laboured for nearly three years under the leadership of Dr B.R. Ambedkar, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and Dr Rajendra Prasad, the RSS remained entirely absent from the entire nation-building process.
Drawing from the official proceedings of November 26, 1949, the Congress general secretary quoted Dr Rajendra Prasad’s presidential address in detail, highlighting how the first President of India repeatedly credited Pandit Nehru and Sardar Patel for laying down the fundamentals of the Constitution through the Objectives Resolution and various committees, while showering unparalleled praise on Dr Ambedkar for his extraordinary leadership of the Drafting Committee despite severe health challenges.

Ramesh also invoked a lesser-known speech delivered on the same day by then Governor-General C. Rajagopalachari in Guwahati, where Rajaji described the appointment of Dr Ambedkar to head the drafting process—initiated at his own suggestion and instantly accepted by Nehru and Patel—as the greatest triumph of non-violence, underscoring the inclusive and magnanimous spirit that defined the Congress-led constitution-making exercise in stark contrast to the RSS ideology.
The Congress leader concluded that while the RSS contributed nothing to the creation of the Constitution and instead began attacking it immediately after adoption, the present political dispensation led by Modi and Shah has taken that destructive agenda to unprecedented levels, waging what he described as a deliberate, step-by-step assault on India’s constitutional edifice on the very day the nation commemorates its adoption in 1949.
