Jagan Mohan Reddy Appeals to PM Modi for Fair Delimitation Process

YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and leader of the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), has called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and leader of the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), has called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure that the upcoming delimitation exercise does not diminish any state’s representation in India’s Parliament.

In a letter sent on Saturday, Reddy stressed the importance of preserving each state’s share of seats in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, warning that an inequitable process could disrupt the nation’s social and political balance.

The delimitation exercise, which adjusts parliamentary and assembly constituencies based on population data, has been a sensitive issue in India.

With the last major delimitation completed in 1976 and seat numbers frozen since then, the next round—expected after the 2026 census—could significantly alter state representation. States with slower population growth, like Andhra Pradesh, fear losing seats to those with higher growth rates, such as Uttar Pradesh or Bihar.

Reddy urged the Prime Minister to approach the exercise with fairness, stating, “No state should suffer a reduction in its share of seats in either house.” He also proposed amending the Constitution to protect states from such losses, particularly in the Lok Sabha, often called the House of the People. His appeal highlights a broader concern among southern states, which have controlled population growth more effectively than their northern counterparts.

As India braces for this critical redistricting, Reddy’s letter underscores the need for a balanced solution to maintain national unity.
