Israel's Iron Dome Achieves 99% Interception Rate Against Missiles

Israel's Iron Dome defence system achieved a 99% interception rate against missiles.

Israel’s Iron Dome air defence system has achieved an interception success rate of nearly 99 per cent against missiles and rockets launched by Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran since the outbreak of major regional hostilities in 2023, according to senior officials from Rafael Advanced Defence Systems. The claim was made on Monday by Yuval Steinitz, chairman of the state-owned defence technology company that manufactures the Iron Dome system, during a conference organised by the Jerusalem Center for Security and Foreign Affairs. The statement comes amid continuing regional tensions and growing international focus on missile defence capabilities in the Middle East.

According to Steinitz, militant groups Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon have collectively launched around 40,000 rockets toward Israel since the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel in October 2023. He stated that the Iron Dome system managed to intercept the overwhelming majority of those projectiles, significantly reducing casualties and infrastructure damage across Israeli cities and civilian areas. While acknowledging that the system was not entirely flawless, he described its performance as being “close to 100 per cent", with interception rates estimated between 98 and 99 per cent during various phases of the conflict.

The Rafael chairman also referred to two rounds of direct confrontation between Israel and Iran since 2024, during which Iran allegedly fired approximately 1,500 ballistic missiles toward Israeli territory. Steinitz claimed that only “several dozens” of those missiles were able to evade interception systems, while the rest were successfully neutralised before reaching their intended targets. He further stated that Israel currently faces no shortage of missile interceptors, suggesting that the country’s defence infrastructure remains fully operational and capable of responding to sustained attacks if necessary.

The Iron Dome system, developed jointly by Israel and supported by the United States, has become one of the world’s most closely watched missile defence technologies due to its repeated deployment in regional conflicts. Designed primarily to intercept short-range rockets and artillery shells, the system uses radar technology to detect incoming threats and determine whether they pose a danger to populated areas before launching interceptor missiles. Over the years, the system has been credited with preventing large-scale destruction during periods of conflict involving militant groups operating from Gaza and southern Lebanon.

Israel’s missile defence network has become increasingly important as regional tensions involving Iran and Iran-backed armed groups continue to intensify. Hezbollah, based in Lebanon, possesses a large arsenal of rockets and missiles, while Hamas has repeatedly launched barrages from Gaza during periods of escalation. Iranian missile capabilities have also emerged as a major security concern for Israel and its allies, particularly following recent confrontations that raised fears of broader regional warfare involving multiple fronts across the Middle East.

The latest remarks from Rafael officials are likely to further strengthen confidence in Israel’s layered air defence systems, although analysts have repeatedly noted that no missile shield can guarantee complete protection under all circumstances. Military experts also point out that modern conflicts involving drones, ballistic missiles, and mass rocket attacks continue to evolve rapidly, requiring constant upgrades to interception technology. Even so, Israeli officials maintain that systems such as Iron Dome remain critical to the country’s national security strategy and civilian protection efforts amid ongoing regional instability.
