Israel Says Iran’s Next Supreme Leader Will Be ‘Target for Elimination’

Israel’s defence minister warns any appointed successor to Iran’s Supreme Leader will be targeted amid rising regional hostilities.

Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz, issued a stark and unprecedented warning on Wednesday that any individual appointed to succeed the late Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will be considered a “target for elimination.” The comments mark a further escalation in tensions between Israel and Iran amid a broadening regional conflict.

Katz’s statement came as senior Iranian clerics convened to select Khamenei’s successor following his death, reportedly from Israeli actions earlier this week. In remarks shared on social media, Katz said Israel would regard any leader installed by what he termed the “Iranian terror regime” — one that pursues hostility toward Israel, the United States, and other nations — as a legitimate target, regardless of their identity or location. He emphasized that Israel, in coordination with U.S. partners, would continue to act with “full force” against Iranian leadership and capabilities.

Israeli media and some international outlets reported that Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the late Supreme Leader, is expected to be formally chosen as the new head of Iran’s clerical hierarchy, though there has been no official confirmation from Iranian state sources. Reports suggest Mojtaba is seen as a hard‑line figure with close ties to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard and other security organs.

The strong rhetoric from Israel’s defence leadership comes amid a broader military confrontation following the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, with Israeli strikes reported against sites linked to Iran’s Assembly of Experts and other strategic facilities. Tehran has responded with ballistic missile launches and other military actions, contributing to heightened volatility across the Middle East.

Regional analysts note that Katz’s remarks break with long‑standing diplomatic norms by directly targeting a potential future head of state for assassination, a stance that could have far‑reaching implications for international law and regional security. International actors, including the United Nations and major world powers, are closely monitoring developments as concerns grow over the possibility of wider escalation beyond the immediate combatants.

The situation remains fluid, with both Israeli and Iranian military activities intensifying. As global markets react and diplomatic channels work overtime to contain further fallout, the world watches to see how this landmark confrontation over leadership succession in Tehran might reshape geopolitical dynamics in the Middle East.
