Iran Says European Support at UN Emboldened US and Israel to Attack

Iran accuses European nations of enabling US and Israeli attacks, citing UN support for sanctions restoration.

Iran on Monday accused several European countries, including France, of contributing to the conditions that led to recent U.S. and Israeli attacks on the Islamic Republic, which Tehran says triggered a broader conflict in the region. Speaking at a weekly press briefing, Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said, “European countries have unfortunately helped create these conditions.” He criticized Europe for failing to uphold international law and for aligning with U.S. positions at the United Nations.

Baqaei argued that European support for discussions on restoring sanctions at the UN Security Council indirectly encouraged what he described as “American and Zionist” acts of aggression against Iran. He said these actions collectively emboldened the U.S. and Israel to continue their strikes, escalating the ongoing war.

The statement comes amid heightened tensions following U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on Tehran that reportedly killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, with his son Mujtaba Khamenei taking over leadership. In retaliation, Iran has carried out attacks on Israel and several Gulf countries, targeting infrastructure, energy facilities, and military sites.

Iran’s accusations underscore the widening diplomatic rift between Tehran and Western powers. While European countries have traditionally sought to mediate tensions over Iran’s nuclear program, Tehran’s latest comments suggest that Iran sees European positions as indirectly complicit in the ongoing military escalation.

The conflict has already caused significant disruption in the Gulf region, including energy shortages, refinery fires, and closures of key shipping routes like the Strait of Hormuz, raising concerns about broader regional and global economic impacts.
