Iran President Masoud Pezeshkian Leaves India After Attending BRICS Summit

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian departed New Delhi for Tehran on Sunday after attending the 18th BRICS Summit in the Indian capital, the Iranian Embassy in India said. Pezeshkian had travelled to India to participate in the summit and held several engagements during his visit. His departure marked the conclusion of his first visit to India as Iranian President.

The Iranian Embassy announced his departure in a post on X, saying Pezeshkian had left New Delhi for Tehran after attending the BRICS Summit. Before leaving India, Pezeshkian also expressed his expectation of meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Iran in the near future. The embassy shared a picture of the two leaders along with a message describing Modi as a “dear friend” and looking forward to his visit to Iran.

During his stay in New Delhi, Pezeshkian met President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Saturday. The two leaders discussed the longstanding friendship between India and Iran, including their cultural and people-to-people ties. Murmu reiterated India’s commitment to pursuing enduring peace through dialogue and diplomacy, according to the President’s Secretariat.

Pezeshkian also held talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit. Modi said the meeting was particularly significant because it was Pezeshkian’s first visit to India. The discussions covered India-Iran relations as well as the prevailing situation in the region, with both sides focusing on continued engagement between the two countries.

Modi said India and Iran should move forward with a long-term and mutually beneficial strategy. He also reaffirmed India’s commitment to the pursuit of enduring peace, particularly amid regional tensions. Pezeshkian’s visit and his remarks about a future meeting in Iran point to continued high-level engagement between New Delhi and Tehran following the BRICS Summit.
