IPS Officer’s Mother Killed At UP Home, Gold Jewellery Missing, Police Launch Probe
Jewellery missing after elderly woman’s death
The 95-year-old mother of an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer was found dead inside her home in Uttar Pradesh’s Ambedkarnagar district, with jewellery she was wearing reported missing. The incident took place in Rudha Dhamrua village, where the woman, identified as Indravati, lived alone. She was the mother of Ashutosh Mishra, a 2016-batch IPS officer currently posted in Lucknow. The circumstances surrounding her death are being investigated as a suspected murder and robbery. According to reports, Indravati’s body was discovered on a cot inside her house by her domestic help at around 9 am.
Ashutosh Mishra reached the village at approximately 3 pm on Sunday and subsequently lodged a complaint alleging murder and robbery against unidentified persons. A gold chain, nose pin, earrings and anklets that Indravati was reportedly wearing were found to be missing, raising suspicion that the death could have been linked to a robbery. The family has suspected that thieves entered the house on Saturday night and killed Indravati before taking away her gold ornaments. However, the circumstances of her death and whether robbery was the motive are yet to be conclusively established.
Investigators are examining the available evidence and the findings of the post-mortem examination as part of the probe. The police said the initial information provided to the Malipur Police Station was that Indravati had died of a heart attack at around 8 am. According to the police statement, a person identified as Ramesh Chandra Mishra informed the station about her death. Later, at around 2:30 pm, Ashutosh Mishra informed the authorities that he believed his mother had been murdered and that the jewellery she had been wearing was no longer on her body.

Police and forensic officials subsequently inspected the scene and carried out the panchnama process. The authorities said there were no visible injuries or signs of a physical struggle on the body during the initial examination. The body was then sent for a post-mortem examination to determine the cause and circumstances of death. A panel of three doctors conducted the examination, which was videographed, according to the police. The police have not publicly identified any suspects in connection with the case so far. Investigators are expected to examine the circumstances in which Indravati was found dead, the missing jewellery and any other evidence that could establish whether an intruder entered the house.
The post-mortem findings are also expected to play an important role in determining the exact cause of death. The incident drew a political response from Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, who criticised the Uttar Pradesh government following the death. In a post on X, Yadav referred to the victim as the mother of an IPS officer and said the incident was unfortunate, adding that even the police were not safe in Uttar Pradesh. His remarks came as investigators continued their probe into the circumstances surrounding Indravati’s death.
The case has raised concerns because the elderly woman was living alone and was found dead inside her residence with several ornaments reportedly missing. However, investigators are yet to establish whether the death was the result of a robbery, whether the missing jewellery was taken during the incident and whether anyone else was present at the house. The police investigation, forensic evidence and post-mortem report will determine the next course of action.
