IndiGo Starts Daily Direct Kolkata–Shanghai Flights Enhancing Connectivity

IndiGo starts daily direct flights connecting Kolkata, Shanghai.

IndiGo, India’s largest airline by market share, has commenced daily direct flight operations between Kolkata and Shanghai, marking a significant expansion in its international network. The new route is expected to strengthen business and trade links between eastern India and China while providing convenient travel options for both leisure and corporate passengers.

The inaugural flight departed from Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata, heading to Shanghai Pudong International Airport. IndiGo officials described the launch as part of the airline’s ongoing strategy to expand connectivity to major Asian hubs. “We are delighted to connect Kolkata with Shanghai on a daily basis, enhancing trade, tourism, and people-to-people interactions,” an IndiGo spokesperson said.

The airline will operate the route using its fleet of Airbus A320neo aircraft, offering a combination of economy and premium seating options. Passengers can expect a full range of in-flight services, including meals, entertainment, and baggage allowances aligned with international standards. The daily frequency is aimed at providing flexibility for both business travelers and tourists seeking efficient travel between India and China.

Industry analysts noted that Kolkata, as a major commercial and cultural hub in eastern India, stands to benefit significantly from improved connectivity to Shanghai, one of China’s key financial centers. The direct flight is expected to facilitate smoother trade engagements, attract Chinese investment, and encourage tourism in both regions. The route also opens opportunities for enhanced educational and cultural exchanges between the two cities.

IndiGo’s expansion into Shanghai reflects broader trends in Indian aviation, where carriers are increasingly focusing on international routes to meet rising demand. With China being a prominent trade partner, the new flight route is expected to cater not only to Indian business communities but also to Chinese nationals traveling for work, tourism, or academic purposes. Airport authorities in Kolkata have welcomed the development, highlighting the positive impact on local employment and ancillary services such as hotels, transportation, and tourism-related industries.

The airline has emphasized safety and operational reliability as key priorities for this new route. Measures in place include compliance with international aviation regulations, stringent maintenance protocols, and trained crew familiar with cross-border operations. IndiGo expects the Kolkata-Shanghai flight to achieve high occupancy rates, reinforcing its position as a leading airline connecting India to major global destinations.
