Indian Secular Front Emerges as Wildcard in West Bengal's Bhangar Seat Battle

Indian Secular Front emerges as third option in West Bengal's competitive Bhangar assembly seat.

The Indian Secular Front (ISF) has emerged as a crucial wildcard in the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections, particularly in the Bhangar constituency, where it is positioning itself as a third force against the dominant All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). As the electoral contest intensifies, Bhangar is once again drawing attention as a key battleground in southern Bengal.

The constituency gained prominence in 2021 when ISF candidate Nawsad Siddique secured a decisive victory, defeating the TMC’s candidate by a margin of over 26,000 votes. That win marked a significant shift in the region’s political landscape, as Siddique became the only non-BJP opposition MLA in the state assembly. The result disrupted TMC’s dominance and highlighted voter appetite for an alternative political platform.

Historically, Bhangar has witnessed shifting political control, having been a stronghold of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) for decades after its establishment in 1951. The CPI(M) maintained its dominance until 2006, after which the TMC made significant inroads, winning the seat before briefly losing it again in 2011. By 2016, the TMC had regained control, only to face an unexpected defeat with the rise of the ISF in 2021.

Formed in 2021, the ISF was established with the aim of increasing political representation for marginalised communities, particularly minorities. Positioned as a secular, centre-left alternative, the party has focused on issues of social justice and inclusion, seeking to mobilise support among Muslims, tribals, and Dalits. This strategy has resonated in constituencies like Bhangar, where Muslims make up nearly 66 per cent of the electorate.

In the 2026 elections, the contest in Bhangar is expected to be closely fought, with multiple parties fielding candidates. The TMC has nominated Saokat Molla, while the BJP has fielded Jayanta Gayen. Other contenders include Mahabubul Islam from the Congress and Mirja Hasan from CPI(ML), indicating a multi-cornered contest that could split votes and influence the final outcome.

Adding another layer of complexity is the recent voter list revision exercise, which reportedly saw around 2.3 lakh deletions in the South 24 Parganas district. With polling scheduled in two phases on April 23 and April 29, and counting set for May 4, all eyes are on Bhangar to see whether the ISF can retain its foothold or if the seat will revert to one of the larger political forces.
