INDIA Bloc Meet: Rahul Gandhi Pushes Unity Agenda Against BJP Ahead of Polls

Rahul Gandhi warns INDIA Bloc allies against infighting ahead of future electoral battles.

Leaders of the INDIA Opposition Bloc met in New Delhi on Monday and emphasized the need for greater unity ahead of future political battles against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The meeting was marked by a strong appeal from Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, who urged alliance partners to avoid internal conflicts and work collectively to address what he described as challenges facing the country and the Constitution.

During a nearly 15-minute address, Rahul Gandhi reportedly stressed that the strength of the opposition alliance depended on its ability to remain united. He cautioned allies against weakening one another through public criticism and internal disagreements. According to sources, Gandhi also expressed disappointment over what he viewed as insufficient support from some alliance partners on issues such as alleged irregularities in voter lists and electoral processes.

The Congress leader is also understood to have raised concerns about parties that continue to target the Congress despite being members of the opposition coalition. Sources indicated that differences involving parties such as the Trinamool Congress and Left parties were discussed during the meeting. Gandhi reportedly argued that the BJP was not invincible and pointed to the results of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections as evidence that coordinated opposition efforts could produce significant electoral gains.

A major outcome of the meeting was the alliance's decision to approach the Chief Justice of India over concerns related to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process and alleged voter list manipulation. Leaders agreed to prepare and submit a formal representation seeking attention to what they described as serious electoral issues. The move reflects the bloc's intention to pursue both political and legal avenues on matters it considers important to democratic processes.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also highlighted recent examples of opposition cooperation. Referring to the alliance's joint efforts in Parliament, he said opposition parties had demonstrated unity when they collectively opposed and defeated the center's delimitation bill in the Lok Sabha earlier this year. Kharge urged alliance members to build on that momentum and strengthen coordination to address political, economic, social, and foreign policy concerns facing the country.

The meeting came nearly a month after assembly elections in four states produced mixed outcomes for major political parties. The BJP formed governments in Assam and West Bengal, while the Congress secured victory in Kerala. In Tamil Nadu, actor-turned-politician Vijay emerged as a significant political force. The INDIA bloc, which was formed three years ago, decided that its leaders would meet every two months, with the next gathering scheduled to take place in Hyderabad in August.
