IIT Guwahati Student's Death On Campus Under Investigation, Suicide Angle Probed

A third-year BTech student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati was found dead on the institute’s campus on Sunday afternoon, with police suspecting suicide. The student was identified as Ritesh Raj Singh, a native of Puri in Odisha, who was pursuing engineering in the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department. According to police sources, Singh allegedly jumped from the fifth floor of a building on the IIT Guwahati campus at around 2:30 pm on July 26. The incident shocked students and faculty members at the institute, prompting authorities to begin an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

Singh was a resident of the Brahmaputra Hostel on the campus. Police officials have initiated inquiries and are examining available evidence to determine the sequence of events leading up to the incident. Further details are expected after the completion of the investigation. In an official statement, IIT Guwahati said it was cooperating fully with the police investigation and that the institute would wait for the findings before sharing additional information. The institute expressed concern over the incident and said necessary procedures were being followed.

The initial investigation indicated that Singh was considered a bright student and had secured an internship opportunity with Goldman Sachs. He was also associated with the institute’s Coding Club and served as its competitive programming head, highlighting his involvement in technical activities beyond academics. The death has led to grief among the IIT Guwahati community, with many students and faculty members mourning the loss of a promising young student. Institute Director Professor Devendra Jalihal sent an email to students on Sunday evening informing them about the death of their batchmate.
