‘I Am the Candidate’: Mamata Banerjee Challenges BJP Ahead of Elections

CM Mamata Banerjee rejects BJP claims, urges voters’ trust in her.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday fired back at the BJP’s recent “charge sheet” against her government, urging the party to first publish a record of its own actions. Speaking at an election rally in Manbazar, Purulia district, Banerjee criticised what she described as the BJP’s attempts to undermine her leadership and deflect attention from its own controversies.

Without naming him directly, Banerjee responded to remarks made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who had submitted a 35-page charge sheet against the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government on Saturday, targeting issues like law and order, infiltration, and corruption. Banerjee countered that the BJP should first account for past incidents, including violence and the alleged mistreatment of Gujaratis in Delhi, before criticising her administration.

Addressing Shah’s earlier remarks about her bandage and health, Banerjee accused him of a deliberate campaign to malign her character. “During the last election, it was your people who deliberately injured my leg. Are you planning to attack me again? A plan is usually hatched before attempting to assassinate someone’s character. Is that what is happening here?” she said, highlighting her resilience in campaigning despite previous injuries.

Banerjee further dismissed Shah’s claims that she played a “victim card” during elections. She asserted that the 2021 Assembly election injury to her leg was an intentional act and described the BJP’s actions as not only character assassination but a broader conspiracy against her. “If Krishna protects, who can harm? Perpetrators always leave behind traces of their crime,” she added.

During the rally, Banerjee urged voters to place their trust in her as the TMC’s candidate for the upcoming Assembly elections. She promised that her government would restore stability to the Jangalmahal region and called on citizens to reject conspiracies and divisive politics.

The exchange underscores the intensifying rhetoric between the TMC and the BJP ahead of West Bengal’s elections, with both sides seeking to mobilize supporters through personal attacks and allegations of misconduct, setting the stage for a fiercely contested electoral battle.
