HRW Urges Investigation Into Attack on Southern Iran School That Killed 160

HRW urges war crimes investigation after US-Israeli attack on Iranian school kills 160, many children.

Human Rights Watch (HRW) has urged an immediate investigation into the recent US-Israeli attack on a primary school in southern Iran that killed at least 160 people, many of them children, and called for those responsible to be held accountable for potential war crimes.

Sophia Jones, an open-source researcher at HRW’s Digital Investigations Lab, emphasized the need for a thorough inquiry. “Those responsible for an unlawful attack should be held to account, including prosecutions of anyone responsible for war crimes,” she said, according to Al Jazeera.

Jones highlighted the apparent targeting of the school during daytime hours, when it would have been full of students and teachers. “A prompt and thorough investigation is needed into this attack, including if those responsible should have known that a school was there and that it would be full of children and their teachers before midday,” she added.

The attack has drawn international condemnation and intensified scrutiny over military operations in the ongoing US-Israel-Iran conflict. Human rights groups have reiterated that civilian sites, particularly schools, must be protected under international humanitarian law.

HRW’s call for investigation aligns with broader efforts to ensure accountability for violations of the laws of war and to prevent further civilian casualties. Observers note that impartial investigations will be crucial in determining responsibility and upholding global norms protecting vulnerable populations in conflict zones.
