How VD Satheesan Beats Rivals To Secure Congress’ Kerala Top Job
Congress leadership discussions paved VD Satheesan’s rise in Kerala politics.
The Congress on Thursday appeared to resolve the leadership deadlock in Kerala by backing VD Satheesan for the state’s top position, bringing an end to days of intense internal deliberations and competing power centres within the party. The decision reportedly came after extensive consultations involving senior Congress leadership in Delhi, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
According to sources, Rahul Gandhi had initially favoured KC Venugopal for the role, with Venugopal also enjoying support from a significant section of Congress MLAs in Kerala. However, the party eventually decided in favour of Satheesan, who was seen by several leaders as the “people’s choice” and a leader with wider acceptance within the state unit. Sources indicated that Gandhi played a key role in persuading different factions to arrive at a consensus.
The discussions reportedly intensified during a meeting in Delhi between Rahul Gandhi and KC Venugopal that was also attended by Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. While the interaction was initially expected to be brief, it reportedly stretched on for several hours as the leadership worked through the political implications of the decision. Party insiders suggested that the prolonged discussions reflected the sensitivity of the issue and the need to avoid factional divisions within the Kerala Congress unit.

Despite stepping aside for the Kerala leadership role, Venugopal is expected to continue playing a major role at the national level. Sources said Rahul Gandhi wants him to remain in Delhi as Congress General Secretary (Organisation), a position regarded as one of the most influential within the party structure. There is also speculation within party circles that Venugopal could emerge as a future contender for the Congress president’s post due to the trust he has reportedly earned from the Gandhi family leadership.
Political observers noted that the atmosphere around Venugopal’s residence in Delhi’s Lodhi Estate reflected the shifting dynamics within the party. Sources described an unusually quiet scene both on Thursday and a day earlier after Rahul Gandhi’s meeting with Mallikarjun Kharge, with the absence of supporters and celebratory activity widely interpreted as a sign that the leadership decision had already been made.
The resolution of the Kerala leadership issue is significant for the Congress as the party seeks organisational stability ahead of upcoming political challenges in the state and nationally. Kerala remains one of the Congress party’s strongest organisational bases, and the leadership choice is expected to influence both internal party cohesion and its electoral strategy against the ruling Left Democratic Front and the Bharatiya Janata Party.
