Hinduja Group Chairman Gopichand P. Hinduja dies at 85 in London hospital after weeks of illness.

Gopichand P Hinduja, the chairman of the influential Hinduja Group, died on November 4, 2025, in a hospital in London. He was 85 years old. Known as 'GP' in business circles, Hinduja was a second-generation leader of the family business and took over the chairmanship following the death of his elder brother, Srichand Hinduja, in 2023. He is survived by his wife Sunita, sons Sanjay and Dheeraj, and daughter Rita.​

Born in Mumbai, Hinduja graduated from Jai Hind College before joining the family enterprise in 1959. Under his stewardship, the Hinduja Group evolved from a regional trading business into a multinational conglomerate with interests spanning automotive, banking and finance, IT, healthcare, real estate, energy, and media among others. Key brands under the Group’s umbrella include Ashok Leyland, IndusInd Bank, and NXTDIGITAL Limited.​

Hinduja's strategic business moves, such as acquiring Gulf Oil in 1984 and Ashok Leyland in 1987, were pivotal in establishing the Group’s footprint in India and globally. His business philosophy, often described as "common sense," guided the group’s growth into a powerhouse employing around 200,000 people worldwide. He held honorary doctorates from the University of Westminster and Richmond College, London.​

The Hinduja family, ranked as the richest in the United Kingdom in the 2025 Sunday Times Rich List, boasts assets exceeding £32 billion. Gopichand Hinduja lived largely in London, while his brothers Prakash and Ashok oversee operations in Monaco and Mumbai respectively, maintaining the Group’s vast and diverse global presence.​

Gopichand’s passing marks the end of an era for one of the world’s most prominent business families, renowned for their global entrepreneurial vision and influence across industries. Tributes continue to pour in from business leaders recognizing his unmatched contribution to international commerce and Indo-British relations.​
