Himanta Sarma Alleges Gaurav Gogoi's Pakistan Ties in Major Face-Off
Assam CM Himanta Sarma accuses Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and his wife of Pakistan links amid row over AI video.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has found himself at the centre of a major political storm following an AI-generated video posted by the BJP’s Assam unit and his subsequent allegations against Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi. The controversy has intensified the war of words between the ruling BJP and the Opposition, drawing sharp reactions at both the state and national levels.
The now-deleted video, shared on social media, allegedly depicted an AI-generated image of Sarma firing a rifle at individuals wearing skull caps, accompanied by provocative captions. The Congress condemned the post as “abhorrent and disturbing,” accusing the BJP of glorifying violence against minorities. Senior Congress leaders said the video amounted to an incitement to mass violence and could not be dismissed as mere troll content.
Responding to the backlash, Sarma held a press conference in Guwahati, shifting the focus to Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi. He alleged that Gogoi had secretly visited Pakistan in 2013 and suggested that the Congress leader may have undergone some form of training there. Sarma further claimed that Gogoi had attempted to “legitimise Pakistan” by engaging with officials from the Pakistan High Commission in the past.

The Assam Chief Minister also made serious allegations involving Gogoi’s British wife, Elizabeth Colburn Gogoi, claiming she had worked in Pakistan between 2011 and 2012 and had “deep links” with Pakistani individuals. Sarma alleged that she collected sensitive information about India and shared it with Pakistan, and further claimed that she had travelled to the country multiple times while being connected to organisations with alleged anti-India interests.
Congress leaders strongly rejected the accusations, with Gaurav Gogoi dismissing the press conference as “worse than a C-grade cinema” and politically motivated. He alleged that the BJP was attempting to divert attention from Congress’s claims of illegal occupation of 12,000 bighas of land by the Chief Minister and his family, an issue Gogoi said was gaining traction through the party’s ongoing outreach campaigns.
Senior Congress figures accused Sarma of lowering the dignity of the Chief Minister’s office and making baseless personal allegations without evidence. They questioned why no action was taken by central agencies if the allegations were indeed serious and pointed out the timing of the claims ahead of elections. The episode has further deepened political polarisation in Assam, with both sides accusing each other of misinformation and misuse of sensitive national security narratives.
