Himanta Biswa Sarma To Stake Claim For BJP Government Formation In Assam Today

Himanta Sarma will meet Assam Governor to stake claim for BJP government formation.

Himanta Biswa Sarma is set to meet Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on Sunday at 11:15 am to formally stake claim to form a new government in Assam, following the National Democratic Alliance’s decisive victory in the state Assembly elections. The meeting is expected to pave the way for the formation of a BJP-led administration for a third consecutive term.

The NDA has secured 102 seats in the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly, with the Bharatiya Janata Party emerging as the dominant partner by winning 82 seats. Its allies, the Asom Gana Parishad and the Bodoland People's Front, contributed 10 seats each, strengthening the alliance’s majority in the House.

Party sources indicate that Sarma is likely to be sworn in as Chief Minister for a second term, with the oath-taking ceremony scheduled for May 12. His selection is expected to be formalised during the BJP legislature party meeting earlier in the day, where he is likely to be elected unanimously as leader of the House.

Ahead of the formalities, Sarma met senior BJP leadership, including Union Health Minister JP Nadda and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, who have been designated as central observers for the government formation process in Assam.

As per constitutional procedure, Sarma had already submitted his resignation to the Governor earlier in the week, paving the way for the transition. With the NDA securing a comfortable majority, the focus now shifts to cabinet formation and policy continuity under the new term.
