Himanta Biswa Sarma Claims 99% Hindus Want to Quit Congress Ahead of Assam Polls
Himanta claims 99% of Hindus want to leave Congress as the Assam election campaign intensifies sharply.
Himanta Biswa Sarma has stirred political controversy ahead of the upcoming state elections by claiming that “99%” of Hindus within the Indian National Congress want to leave the party. He added that the Congress could turn into a “single-community party” after the Assam Assembly election results.
In an interview, Sarma said the “disintegration process” within Congress had already begun in Assam and expressed confidence that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would secure a record-breaking victory. He highlighted what he described as strong governance, citing employment generation and development work during his tenure, and said the elections are being conducted in a “festive mood".
The chief minister also reiterated that infiltration remains a major issue in Assam, while asserting that the BJP is well-prepared for the April 9 polls. In earlier remarks, he made controversial statements suggesting that Congress draws support from outside India, further intensifying the political rhetoric ahead of the elections.

The comments have drawn sharp criticism from opposition leaders. DK Shivakumar accused Sarma of attempting to polarise voters along community lines. Defending Assam Congress President Gaurav Gogoi, Shivakumar said such statements were politically motivated and aimed at diverting attention. He also rejected claims related to infiltration and alleged foreign support, calling them baseless. Shivakumar further suggested that Sarma’s repeated references to Gogoi indicate political anxiety ahead of the elections.
With campaigning intensifying, the exchange highlights the sharp and often polarised political discourse leading up to the Assam Assembly polls, where both the BJP and Congress are seeking to consolidate support across key voter groups.
