Himanta Biswa Sarma Calls For Dismissal If Mamata Banerjee Does Not Resign
Himanta Sarma demands Mamata Banerjee’s dismissal after resignation refusal.
Political tensions escalated sharply in West Bengal after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma demanded the dismissal of outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, following her refusal to resign after the results of the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026.
Sarma, in an interview, said that Banerjee’s decision not to step down after the electoral outcome “can only be handled in one way,” adding that she should be dismissed if she continues to refuse resignation. His remarks added to the political uncertainty already unfolding in the state after the declaration of results.
The comments came hours after Banerjee publicly stated that she would not visit Raj Bhavan or submit her resignation, asserting that she had not “lost in principle” and therefore would not step down. Her statement has created an unusual constitutional situation in the aftermath of the election outcome.

The results of the assembly polls saw the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerging with a majority, ending the long-standing rule of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the state. Banerjee’s refusal to resign despite the result has intensified political debate over the transition of power.
According to official sources, while such a refusal could theoretically complicate the immediate transition process, constitutional experts note that the formation of government depends on the majority party staking claim and being invited by the Governor, rather than the outgoing chief minister’s resignation alone.
The current term of the West Bengal Assembly is scheduled to end on May 7, leaving a narrow window for the BJP to formally stake its claim and initiate the process of government formation. If successful, it would mark one of the fastest transitions in the state’s recent political history.
As the situation develops, both political and constitutional attention remains focused on the next steps from the Governor’s office and the majority party’s formal claim, which will determine the immediate direction of governance in West Bengal.
